Gyms In North America
Welcome to my page on Gyms in North America.
I’ve subdivided this into Gyms in the USA, Canada and Mexico– check out currency conversions and regions below.
1. Gyms in the USA
Currency approximation : €1 = US$1.17, £1 = US$1.31, AU$1 = US$0.74 at the time of writing.
Gyms in the USA are some of the best I’ve seen in the world. Americans don’t do things by halves and gyms are no exception. Almost without exception, every gym I went to was large+, modern and in great condition. The downside of this is the price tag. They are without a doubt the most expensive gyms I’ve been to in the world.
Free Passes?
Maybe. But with many gyms enforcing proof of residency before honouring a free pass, you’ll have your work cut out for you. By far the easiest option was Planet Fitness, who offer a quibble-free free pass on their website at each of their locations. I literally never had a problem getting in to any of their clubs and I wasn’t given the hard sell either. Planet Fitness Clubs are great to work out in, although if you like using free weights to train heavy, you might not find exactly what you need – click on individual clubs for info.
If free passes fail, day passes ranged from US$10 – $30, with most being around $20 – ouch.
My advice: register online, turn up with ID and practise your best negotiating skills!

2. Gyms in Canada
Gyms in Canada have all been of a very high standard and in the cities I’ve visited, charge less for a casual visit in comparison with the USA. If a free pass is not available, prices I’ve encountered have ranged from $7.50 to $20 for a day pass, with most falling between $10 and $15.
Currency approximation : US$1 = $1.30, €1 = CAD$1.51, £1 = CAD$1.69, AU$1 = CAD$0.94 at the time of writing.
Many clubs offer free trials which you can register for online, though it varies whether or not they require you to be a resident and if they enforce this. The main chains I’ve used have been GoodLife Fitness and the YMCA (both of which charge $15 per day), Anytime Fitness and Fit4Less (both charged $10.50 at the clubs I used) and Motion Fitness which was the most expensive at $20. However some of these clubs do offer free trials, please see regions below for my experiences at each.

3. Gyms in Mexico
The gyms I visited were solely located in two touristic towns in Mexico. As such, the prices ranged from medium to expensive and facilities varied widely, but were well-equipped, mostly with good quality equipment.
Currency approximation : Mexico uses pesos, written as $ locally.
MXN$100 = US$4.98 = €4.27 = £3.76 = AU$6.71 at the time of writing.
