Gyms in Wellington

Hi and welcome to my page on Gyms in Wellington. This pretty little city certainly had character, but when I visited during the New Zealand summer, it was also very wet. So, no excuses – it’s time to hit a nice dry gym.

I only used one gym whilst here, which I’ve reviewed in detail. I have researched and visited others though so keep reading for more details of these.

Revive Fitness  – I trained here!

Revive Fitness

This gym is female only, and since publishing the post has shut down. However there are two other branches of Revive Fitness nearby, which I believe are of a similar standard. If you want to read more about the club, please click here.

Gyms in Wellington with Free Passes

1. Jetts Fitness

49-61 Cuba St, Te Aro, Wellington

Website

Cost: 3 day free trial, valid Mon – Thu.

Having registered for a 3-day free trial, I turned up during staffed hours on a Saturday, hoping to get started. In my enthusiasm, I had however failed to notice that the three day trial must be taken Monday to Thursday. Why? I have no idea. Three day weekend breaks from workouts don’t feature with me!

However, I was told by the very friendly staff that I was welcome to return on Monday and they would happily start my free trial. No proof of residency was requested (despite the website terms stating this), though of course, it might have been a different story if I had returned. Unfortunately I left the area on Monday morning prior to staffed hours. Although I didn’t get a proper look around, at a glance the club appeared to be of Jetts’ usual high standard.

2. Les Mills Extreme

52-70 Taranaki St, Te Aro, Wellington

Website

Opening hours: Mon – Thu: 530 – 2230, Fri: 530-2130, Sat & Sun: 700-2000
Public Holidays:   700-2000

Centrally located, Les Mills Extreme offers a free pass on the website and looks to have an excellent gym in addition to Les Mills classes. Upon registering for the free pass online, the terms do state that you must be a New Zealand resident, although I didn’t end up going to find out if this would be checked. Let me know what happens if you do!

Other Gyms in Wellington

Other gyms central to Wellington are Snap Fitness, Habit Majestic and Exodus Health and Fitness. However I didn’t visit them on this occasion due to spending only a few days in Welly.

Spending a few weeks or longer in New Zealand?

Jetts is an excellent chain which has numerous clubs around the country. It has very reasonable weekly rates, allowing access to all clubs nationwide. This might be worth considering if you are staying in New Zealand for a few weeks or months. Weekly rates are low and vary from around $6 – $13 per week, but some packages involve a $45 fee, whilst others tie you in to a contract for 3 or 12 months.

The most attractive option I could see for a medium-term stay in New Zealand was the $10.95 per week deal. This appears to have no lock-in contract as I write this, although you do have to pay the $45 fee. What is attractive about it is that you can use all the clubs across the country as you travel. Click here to see the membership options. Then click “Join now” under any of them to read the T & C’s or talk to them directly.
