Gyms in Perth
G’day from WA! Hope this finds you in blue skies and sunshine in beautiful Perth. I’ve been here twice now and both times I’ve been lucky enough to land in gorgeous sunny weather, even if it was only Spring and 5:35am. Yep, Australia certainly knows how to do weather better than my home country! But let’s get down to it and check out what’s going on with gyms in Perth…
As I was only here for a short stay before embarking on a few stretches of the Bibbulmun track (1000km hike around WA), I stuck to the most central gyms in Perth to keep it simple. These turned out to be right next door to each other by Woolworths on Murray Street in Perth CBD. Convenient for the post-gym refuel!
Feel free to click on individual links for a full description of each gym’s facilities, cost, location and multiple images. Otherwise check out brief descriptions and a comparison below.
Anytime Fitness Perth – Murray St, WA
Cost of casual rates: $15 a go, or $25 for 2 passes or $30 for 3 day passes
Opening Hours: 24/7 for members, otherwise:
Staffed Hours: Mon – Thu: 10:00 – 19:00, Fri: 9:00 – 14:00
The first of two gyms in Perth which I’ve used, Anytime Fitness is global chain with a good standard of facilities. You can always rely on modern equipment and decor, along with a good range of cardio, weights and functional equipment. This club seemed a little smaller than others I’ve visited, particular evident due to it being a popular city centre branch, ie busy!
You’ll find dumbbells up to 50kg, barbells up to 45kg, a good range of cardio equipment and a dedicated functional training area. Note that the showering facilities here are private, ie separate cubicles including an area to get changed in privacy.
Goodlife Murray St, Perth
Cost of casual rates: a 2 day pass is $30. (1 day pass no longer offered)
Opening Hours: Mon – Wed: 6:00 – 21:30, Thu – Fri: 6:00 – 21:00,
Sat: 8:00 – 17:00, Sun 10:00 – 15:00.
Next up is Goodlife Murray St – located under the supermarket. This large club is also very popular and it’s easy to see why, what with its huge cardio room, two studios (Group Fitness and Cycling) and a large gym. The range of weights is similar to Anytime Fitness, but the two functional training areas here certainly surpass the smaller area at Anytime Fitness and the Body Combat class I did here was awesome!
The large changing rooms here are open plan, in contrast to Anytime Fitness.
Decision Time – Anytime Fitness or Goodlife?
So which gym in Perth will you pick?
Well, this will probably come down to how long you’re staying, what time you want to work out and what type of workout you’re doing. Goodlife Fitness is a much larger facility and overall offers a lot more, but they don’t offer a one day casual rate.
Bear in mind the staffed hours of each club – Anytime Fitness is not staffed for as long as Goodlife, meaning that if you want to work out early morning or later evening, you can’t get in.
If time is not an issue and you’re only going to use a gym once, I’d go for Anytime Fitness at these prices. However if you want to go twice, and/or if you enjoy a good Les Mills class, Goodlife would be my first choice – it’s only $5 extra for 2 days but you’ll get a lot more for your money – classes and a much bigger gym!
Things get trickier though if you’re planning 3 workouts, as Anytime Fitness offer a very appealing 3 for $30 deal! I wasn’t in this situation, but if I was, I’d probably go talk to Goodlife and ask what short of offer they could give me before deciding! Gyms make a lot of money by selling casual passes to gyms, so I’m sure they’d open to negotiation!
Whichever you choose, try to avoid peak periods as both gyms got extremely busy around 4 or 5pm.
Summary of Gyms in Perth
I hope this helps you when deciding on gyms in Perth. I looked at others too, including having a good hunt for Walking on Clouds Wellness Centre, but simply couldn’t find it – I believe it has shut down. As ever, when picking a club, there is no one-size-fits-all. It’s a question of weighing up the cost, facilities and what you prioritise in your workouts so that you find what’s right for you.
Have a great time in Perth and WA generally!
