Location and Entry
Puma Gym is a medium sized gym located in the centre of Malecon, which is rated as the safest area in Guayaquil – for what that’s worth! It’s very easy to find on the waterfront main street and it’s correctly located on Google maps.
I initially attended on a Monday morning at around 730am and it was fairly busy, and indeed noisy, due to the well-attended 7am Body Combat class. Note, there is no door or wall between the studio and the main gym area – but this all adds to the atmosphere! The main gym is situated in the basement with the studio. You’ll also find some cardio machines, including treadmills and cross trainers, along with a spinning studio on the ground floor.
All equipment was in pretty good condition and I saw fans in operation, but no aircon. I found it slightly warm by 8am but not desperately so.
Classes and Functional Training
The sizeable studio has around 24 classes a week, including Body Pump, Body Combat, CX Worx, Rumba (I believe this is a form of dance) and a spinning class at the time of writing. Staff informed me the CX Worx class is 60 minutes long (not the 30 mins I’d done previously at home). But when I got up early to brave it, they had changed it to Body Pump instead.
When the studio is not in use, it would be easy to use it as a super-spacious floor area. But in any case the gym is well spaced with a small, slightly separated squarish area containing (short but thick) mats, step boards, Swiss balls and medicine balls, and some floor space. If this area is busy, it’s not hard to find floor space around the gym if the studio. Additional equipment includes numerous very light dumbbells and Les Mills discs in the studio.
Puma Gym is a good quality gym at a fair price, well located in a safe area. Recommended!
