Location and Entry
After registering online for a 3-day free trial, I embarked on the 15-20 minute walk across the city to Jetts Fitness Auckland. My accommodation was in the southern part of the city centre, and this Auckland gym is slightly north. Their website states in the small-print you must be a resident of New Zealand to get the free trial, but I was feeling optimistic after success at gaining free entry to other Jetts clubs.
I turned up on the Tuesday after Easter, keen to undo the damage of eating far too much chocolate, and wasn’t disappointed. A very friendly staff member issued me with a 3-day trial card. No questions asked – I told him I’d registered online. Bingo. The facilities at Jetts Auckland were superb and even a little bigger than most other Jetts clubs I’d been to.
Facilities
Considering this Auckland gym is in the city centre, it was very spacious and there were probably several areas in the gym where they could have run small group fitness classes if they’d wanted to. Even in peak periods, you’d be in no danger of feeling claustrophobic here. I attended at 16:00 once and 12:00 twice midweek, and it was always fairly busy. But frankly there is so much choice there, it’s pretty easy to find another element of your workout to do if what you want to use is taken.

The equipment was all in excellent condition and with a huge range of functional training equipment. You’ll find everything from kettlebells to Swiss balls, foam rollers to medicine balls and a number of good quality mats – a rare quality! Weights and cardio equipment was also ample with a lot of variety as you’d expect from this reputable chain.
Take your own towel and beware – like most clubs in the chain, Jetts Auckland has no lockers. However you will find cubbyholes in the main gym area.
Auckland Gyms in Summary – Which Club?
Realistically there is little to separate Jetts Fitness Auckland from YMCA Auckland City Fitness. Depending on how long you are staying Auckland, I would suggest the free trial at Jetts Auckland and if you’re happy to stay at the YMCA, a free day there – check out my review first. I stayed in Auckland for a week over the Easter period and the gyms were closed for a day or two. The 3 day trial here was therefore sufficient for me – I went running outside twice in addition to the gym workouts.
Spending a few weeks or longer in New Zealand?
Jetts is an excellent chain which has numerous clubs around the country and very reasonable weekly rates, allowing access to all clubs nationwide. This might be worth considering if you are staying in New Zealand for a few weeks or months. Weekly rates are low and vary from around $6 – $13 per week, but some packages involve a $45 fee, whilst others tie you in to a contract for 3 or 12 months.
The most attractive option I could see for a medium-term stay in New Zealand was the $10.95 per week deal. It appears to have no lock-in contract as I write this, although you do have to pay the $45 fee. What is attractive about it is that you can use all the clubs across the country as you travel.
