Price – free every day if you go for the week around Vietnamese New Year (Tet)! However, I do recall asking the normal price and being told it was around 300k – 400k dong per day. No great surprise given this is a top of the range gym, but might be out of budget if you are backpacking.
Location
California Fitness Saigon is centrally located in Ben Thanh and was 10-15 minutes walk from my accommodation, an excellent hostel (Vy Da Backpackers 2). As it happened, I arrived in Vietnam just after Tet when many shops and services close down for around a week. Not here. This place was not only open, it was offering the public free use of the gym, because of Tet, for the next five days! I’m unsure how long this had already been going on! What an excellent idea – allow everyone the chance to undo the damage of any celebratory over-indulgences – for free! And very good of them not just to restrict this to locals.
Facilities
I was shown around California Fitness Saigon’s facilities which spanned several floors – the cardio floor, the weights floor, the yoga studio floor to name a few. Friendly staff greeted me on each occasion I visited and I was able to use the gym and do as many classes as I liked – I took them up on this on one occasion and did yoga, taught in English by an Indian man. Whilst I’m no expert on yoga, he seemed very professional to me.
The gym was quiet (perhaps due to the time of year) and had everything you could ever need. All facilities were new and top quality and of the standard you would expect from any Western chain. The changing rooms were also top-notch, extremely clean and included hairdryers and shower gel. Take a padlock for your locker.
