Gyms In Wanaka
Think New Zealand is expensive? Well, double that, and welcome to Wanaka! As one member of the gym staff said to me as I reacted in horror to the pricing, “Wanaka fancies itself as the Kensington of New Zealand”. Well yes, I admit it is one of the most beautiful parts of the country, but a gym is still a gym – and I am still a backpacker working to a budget. Gyms in Wanaka are far from cheap.
Although Wanaka has a number of gyms, I was unsuccessful in acquiring a discount, eventually settling for just one gym workout in my three days there. As I’d come from gymless Franz Josef, I was keen to get some weight-training in somewhere!
Between the two…
1. Multi Peak Fitness Wanaka
17/31 Dunmore St, Wanaka 9305
Opening times: Mon – Fri: 600-2000, Sat 800-1300, Sun closed.
Cost: $15
From the gyms in Wanaka which I found, Multi Peak Fitness Wanaka is the only one I could find in the centre. This fairly small gym was inside a mall and had little equipment. They weren’t prepared to offer a discount, and if I’m going to part with $15 I really want to be making the most of good facilities. I decided to look elsewhere. They were responsive to emails though, and suggested I come in and have a look and that they might be able to come to an agreement on a weekly rate.

2. ProActive 24 Health and Fitness Studios
Anderson Heights 17 Plantation Rd, Wanaka 9305
Opening Hours: Mon-Thu: 6:00 – 21:00, Fri: 6:00 – 19:00
Sat: 8:00 – 13:00, Sun: 9:00 – 13:00, Public hols: 8:00 – 13:00
Cost: $20 casual use.
From my research, Proactive Wanaka was the second closest to my central accommodation – an 18 minute walk. It was also clear from the website that it would have everything I’d need – and it did. A top of the range fitness club, offering a gym and small floor area downstairs, a studio upstairs (running mainly Les Mills classes) and a large airconditioned room full of space and functional training equipment. From TRXs to kettlebells and plyoboxes to medicine balls, it had everything. I decided to go for it, at only $5 more than Multi Peak above, and used it once.
The price did at least include classes and in addition to weight training there, I participated in a Body Balance class. Great quality instruction, friendly staff and top facilities.
Other Gyms In Wanaka
3. Latitude44 Fitness
15 Cliff Wilson St, Wanaka 9305
Cost $20 per visit. Latitude44 Fitness is located close to Proactive but appeared to be shut when I went (during advertised opening hours).
4. The Fit Collective
5 Gordon Rd, Wanaka 9305
Cost: $20 for a casual visit.
Despite a friendly email chat, there was no advance on this price. The Fit Collective is a 25 minute walk from town.
Summary
if you’re on a budget and in need of a gym, don’t spend long in Wanaka! If the weather is kind to you, I recommend climbing Roy’s Peak for a good cardio and leg workout. Stunning views too.
I was very happy with Proactive in terms of its facilities but wouldn’t pay that price more than once. If you’re staying centrally then check out Multi Peak – perhaps you’ll have more luck than me in acquiring a discount, and it may well have sufficient equipment for your needs.
