Gyms In Lake Taupo
Hey and welcome to my page on gyms in Taupo. I hope you get better weather than I did when I was here – I think I spent more time in gyms than outside when I was here unfortunately! Or fortunately for the purpose of this website of course.
For full reviews on the gyms in Taupo that I’ve used, please click on these two individual links or see brief summaries here. See also another gym I researched below.
1. Jetts Fitness, Lake Taupo
This medium-sized gym is part of an international chain. So far, it’s never disappointed and nor did it here. Staff were friendly, you’ll find a good range of cardio and weight training equipment and it’s all fairly modern. As is typical with Jetts, the changing cubicles are all private unisex ones, so you can lock yourself in a private shower room. If you register for the three day free pass online, remember it’s only valid Mon – Thu.
2. BodyWorx Taupo
Also very equipped, I especially liked BodyWorx Taupo as it’s one of few gym to offer a backpacker rate – thank you BodyWorx. For a very reasonable $8, you’ve got access to three floors of gym equipment. Overall this Lake Taupo gym is probably not much bigger than open-plan Jetts above. If you want to train Fri – Sun or you’re staying longer than the Jetts trial, then I recommend coming here.

3. Silhouette Fitness Taupo
***This gym is for WOMEN ONLY***
12a Taniwha Street, Taupo
Opening Times: Mon-Thurs: 5.45 – 20:00, Fri: 5.45 – 19:00, Sat: 7.30 – 11:30, Sun: 8:00 – 11:00
Cost: After exchanging emails with Silhouette, prior to my arrival, they informed me that the cost of casual gym usage is $15 per session or $70 for 10 concession cards.
As I’d only be there for 3 days and couldn’t take advance of the 10 pack, I asked if they could offer me any form of backpacker discount for the days I’d be using the gyms. I wanted to use it twice, on days 1 and 3 since I planned to do the Tongariro crossing on day 2, though it was in fact cancelled due to weather. A couple of emails later, they eventually agreed to let me use for the gym for a total of $20 for the two visits. This was not competitive compared to BodyWorx so I didn’t go.
Location
This Lake Taupo gym is however well-located in the centre, close to backpacker accommodation.
Summary of Silhouette Fitness Taupo
Due to other gyms being more accommodating on budget, I did not use this facility. Please see details of Jetts Taupo and BodyWorx.
Spending a few weeks or longer in New Zealand?
Jetts is an excellent chain which has numerous clubs around the country. It has very reasonable weekly rates, allowing access to all clubs nationwide. This might be worth considering if you are staying in New Zealand for a few weeks or months. Weekly rates are low and vary from around $6 – $13 per week, but some packages involve a $45 fee, whilst others tie you in to a contract for 3 or 12 months.
The most attractive option I could see for a medium-term stay in New Zealand was the $10.95 per week deal. This appears to have no lock-in contract as I write this, although you do have to pay the $45 fee. What is attractive about it is that you can use all the clubs across the country as you travel. Click here to see the membership options. Then click “Join now” under any of them to read the T & C’s or talk to them directly.
