Location

Anytime Fitness Burnaby is a medium-sized gym, located a couple of minutes’ walk from Metrotown metro station on the Expo line. Burnaby itself is a well-priced alternative to Vancouver for accommodation if you’re on a budget, hence I’m staying here in an Airbnb. It’s only 15 minutes away from downtown – ten stops to Waterfront.

Facilities

Although the gym was smaller than I expected for a big chain, it had everything you would expect in terms of cardio, resistance machines and free weights, and in addition had a sizeable dedicated area for floor work. This area contained a rowing machine as well, along with a TRX, BOSUs, medicine balls, foam rollers, a rack of lightweight dumbbells, skipping ropes, resistance bands, Swiss balls, boxes, stepboards and a roller – that’s most of them anyway! There were even a couple of spin bikes, although the bulk of the cardio equipment was in the main gym. (No other rowing machines though.)

Weights

The weights area contains a Smith machine, squat rack and benchpress station in addition to a good range of freeweights; dumbbells up to 100lbs and barbells up to 110lbs. There are a number of resistance machines, along with cable crossovers and pull ups bars, but due to the size of the gym, resistance machines are a little limited – focus on technique and hammer those freeweights!

Cardio

Anytime Fitness Burnaby was well-equipped with treadmills and arc-trainers, in addition to a few spin bikes, exercise bikes and steppers.

Classes

There are a handful of classes advertised (five per week) in the studio where you can otherwise do floor work. These are a TRX class, Bootcamp, Hatha Yoga, Gentle Yoga and HIIT.

Summary

Not a bad gym at all for $10.50 and it is well located and the equipment was all in good condition. I particularly liked the studio for doing floor work, preferring to knock out my burpees without an audience watching me puff and pant my way through!
